32 of us made our way by various routes and means, to the HF Freshwater Bay hotel, on 24 September 2016. All excited to see our hotel, our rooms, and the (in)famous full board meals.
The crossing of the Solent was incredibly smooth, so no issues there.
The hotel, and staff, may have been tired after a long and busy season, but they were charming, and attentive, as we knew they would be.
Toni P had done her homework exceptionally well, and no concern was left unanswered.
Leaders had been identified to offer a variety of walks for every taste, or need. And did we need them, to walk off the food??
The members that opted for the shorter, or less demanding walks, also managed to do some exploring of other parts of the island, including some of the historic sites, such as Carisbrook Castle, and Osborne House, that the longer walks couldn’t include, but we had a (sort of) free day on the Wednesday, and split up, to enjoy the assorted options such as a short walk, or independent exploration.
We joined in the evening entertainment, of quizzes and talks, along with the other groups staying there, and some of us even won things like pens, with lights on, and mugs, as additional mementos of our break.
The weather was very good to us, only a few showers, but nothing to detract from our enjoyment of the week.
I came away feeling that I need to go back, to see all the things we just couldn’t fit into our busy schedule, and know I wasn’t alone there.
If you haven’t experienced a group holiday with East Surrey Walkers please do think about it. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Superb company, led walks, far too much scrummy food, and of course the occasional drink, from the well-stocked bars, always someone to gossip to, and to share experiences with.
