Walking for Pleasure

Report on Group Holiday to walk Hadrian's Wall June 2015

We stopped at a different B&B each night, arranged by Contours Holidays, who moved our bags on while we walked between 8 and 15 miles each day. Because of our numbers, we were split up into three or four B&B although we all enjoyed meeting up at a pub for our evening meal.

The middle section of the wall, roughly from Chesters Fort to Birdoswald Fort, includes most of the best preserved sections of wall and forts and has the most dramatic setting - on top of the Great Whin Sill.

Of the forts, the most interesting was Vindolanda which is still being excavated, and where many of the finds are on show in a modern museum. We also looked round the Forts at Housesteads, and Birdoswald. Nick had visited these as a boy and was keen to see how much they had changed - not much was the answer.

We had time for a quick look round Carlisle before catching the train back south - some travelling via the famous Carlisle to Settle line.
Many thanks to Barbara B for overall organisation of a very enjoyable holiday, and to all the walk leaders and evening meal organisers.
