East Surrey Walkers

Walking for Pleasure

Grade level descriptions

Below are the Ramblers definitions of national walking grades, which also fit in with East Surrey Walkers grades.

  • Easy - walks for anyone who does not have a serious mobility difficulty, a specific health problem or is seriously unfit, although the walks may be on unsurfaced rural paths with stiles. Ideal for anyone new to walking or back from an injury or illness. Comfortable walking boots are recommended. We use this grade to describe our Ambles walking at 1-1.5.
  • Leisurely - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths and stiles. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended. We use this grade to describe most of our Short Walks, and some Longer walks. Walking at around 2mph.
  • Moderate - walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country, and may be at a brisker pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. We typically use this grade to describe our Long and Linear Walks but may include more difficult short walks. Walking at around 2.5mph.
  • Strenuous - walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country, and likely to be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. We use this grade to describe our Fast Fitness Workout Walks which walk at 3.5mph..

Please note that a particular walk may have a different grade in the programme from that shown above, e.g. a long walk may be shown as Strenuous due to many hills or fast pace, or Leisurely if it has no hills and is taken at a slower pace.
